Suryeon – A biochemist seeking to heal and rebuild

The country I was born in was not my choice, but possibility and a taste for the future has always inspired my own choices. Despite growing up in North Korea’s repressive political system, where life is dictated by the regime and intellectual curiosity is stamped out, my grandmother, a chemist, nurtured my curiosity for science. This spirit of inquiry, in a place where curiosity is forbidden meant I fled North Korea, with my family, seeking the freedom outside of the country to pursue my dreams.

After a dangerous journey through several countries before finally settling in South Korea, I have since strived to achieve the best, inspired by my grandmother who passed away in North Korea. I finished my bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Yonsei University, a top university in South Korea. I know that now research is my true calling and that it is all my own choice to become a scientist.

With CNK’s support, I am excited to start a masters degree in biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh this September 2025 and take steps toward my ultimate goal of a PhD, studying my passion, cancer research. For me, studying at Edinburgh is crucial to make a meaningful impact through research. In fact, beyond academic growth, my journey – from studying in North Korea to continuing my education in South Korea and the UK – carries significant meaning. By making my own choices, pursuing my dreams, and helping others, I am directly contradicting everything the Kim regime stands for. For scientists still in North Korea, many of whom might read research papers, my experience and name can serve as a source of hope, demonstrating that scientific pursuit transcends political systems and ideologies. For young North Korean escapees still struggling to find their path, I hope to be a positive role model, showing what can be achieved with the right mindset and support.

For my community, I want to demonstrate that leadership is the fusion of passion and compassion. Passion drives us toward our goals, while compassion allows us to listen, collaborate, and uplift others. I want to become not just a scientist but a leader who fosters a sustainable research culture and inspires fellow North Korean escapees to pursue their dreams. Leadership, to me, is about growing together and shaping a better future through passion and compassion.

CNK’s Enabling Freedom Network Scholarship is not only an essential financial resource but also an opportunity that empowers North Korean escapees like myself to reach our full potential and contribute meaningfully to our communities. I want to use this chance to find better solutions,  conduct meaningful research and support those who come after me.
